MAME LR-2003 not working with 0.78 roms on Retropie

  • Hello everyone,

I followed all the steps online to transfer over my rom set 0.78 to use on Retropie with a 128GB Micro SD card. I formatted the 16 GB SD card to FAT 32 that I was using to move the roms from my computer to the Pie. I put the SD card into the PIE and let it do its thing and copy the roms over. I tried putting them in the LR-2003 folder as well as the Arcade Folder. I selected LR-2003Mame as the emulator for the roms...and all I can get is that they try to load and play...the screen goes black and then after a few second it bounces me back to the games list within MAME.

The only ROM that behaves like they do on my computer is GUNSMOKE out of the ten or so I've tried. Games that show as functional online guides do not load. Things like Cruisin, R-Type, Gauntlet...

I'm at a roadblock with this...am I missing something? Should I be copying over BIOS or something else as well? I ordered the whole setup through EBAY and the SD card came loaded with Mame4all and LR-2003 Mame. I provided the roms myself.....and other emulators do what they should. Nintendo is no problem.

Ask the seller. No idea what people have done with their illegal sales.

  • @numminzak Maybe the sd you illegally bought aren't meant to be the version they're meant to be. As it was already stated, ask the person you bought it from. If you want any help, you're going to have to start from a fresh official image.

  • It's neither illegal to sell RetroPie, nor is in illegal to purchase it. I have no idea what these two people are saying, other than adding noise instead of signal.

@NumminzAK as you did purchase it, for support, you need to ask the seller. It's in general a bad idea to buy OSS unless there is an 'official' distribution. You'll likely be better off just taking the SD card and burning clean image of RetroPie from the official download site. Then, if you have issues, perhaps folks here will actually be helpful.

It is illegal to sell RetroPie - the Legal page on the RetroPie site makes that perfectly clear:

The image we provide is Raspbian Lite with RetroPie pre-installed. Much of the software included in the RetroPie image have non-commercial licences. Because of this selling a pre-installed RetroPie image is not legal – this includes “giving away” a pre-installed RetroPie with your commercial product. Including copyrighted games with RetroPie is also not allowed.

    @herb_fargus Who are you anyway?

@jonnykesh I'd like to know that myself.

  • After pointing out that a page making a claim doesn't make it a Law, I'll also point out that in the USA and GB (and likely other jurisdictions), offering Legal advice is illegal unless the one offering it is a lawyer.

Should the OP have purchased it off of eBay? No. Regardless of the legality. But no one was actually trying to help the poor fellow. That's bad form. Whomever you are.

A simple response like the one I provided was all that was necessary. And hopefully helped.

@jonnykesh In case you are serious and don't know:

  • @treaves Why should anyone offer assistance when, regardless of legality, what he has done is against the spirit of the RetroPie project and the ethos of Open Source Software?
"offering Legal advice is illegal unless the one offering it is a lawyer." - Is this not legal advice? Have you just committed a crime?

  • @caver01 I was joking. Someone else clearly doesn't know who Herb is.

Why would it matter who he is? He knows how to write some code, so he gets special dispensation? That's in the "spirit of the RetroPie project and the ethos of Open Source Software"?

Let's say you're all correct; the OP had no business purchasing anything off of eBay. Presumed. A simple response still would have been better than what was provided.

I find it sad that every other poster to this thread would prefer to make a fellow human feel bad and/or inferior. Great ethos!

Informing a person that a certain act is illegal based on public information is not considered “legal advice” Herb (retropie’s co-creator) is citing the non-commercial licenses of Retroarch, Libretro, the Retropie Setup Script and most of the emulators included on the image which fall under GPL, which is a very real and enforceable legal license.

Telling somebody “selling retropie is illegal” is about as illegal as telling somebody “running a stop sign is illegal”

An example of “legal advice” would be telling somebody “hey party A, you should sue party B because I read on the internet that you have legal ground to do so” - though in actuallity, this would never be enforced by the US courts.

It’s best to get your context straight to avoid sounding ignorant.

Well, hold on now. That's not really how it went down. Scroll back up and you will see that the first response by @herb_fargus was simple and went straight to the point. "Ask the seller," followed by pointing out that the sale was illegal.

The poster, having joined the forum obviously ignored the required READ THIS FIRST item number 5 which clearly states that third party images cannot be supported, and went ahead and posted this question anyway. Regardless of who Herb happens to be, his response was on point and it might have come from any one of us.

The very next post by @Darksavior clarified that it is possible the OP has a version conflict--something only the seller can confirm and/or troubleshoot, and added that a fresh, official image is the supportable starting place--a fact that even you corroborated in your first response--although you questioned the legality point, turning what was at first reasonable advice into an argument about the software licenses.

The way I see it, we did have a simple response, but that changed when you jumped in and accused Herb and Darksavior of adding more noise than signal. Seems to me, the "noise" started with your post which did not offer more technical "signal" at all, you just repeated Darksavior's advice and picked a fight about who can do what from a legal perspective.

  • That was a high learning curve within 12 days membership. I saw no higher downvote score before.

  • Well, I'm glad that's all straightend out now. Nothing like a new pair of glasses.
