Retroarch keyboard and controls

Hello,
I need to set up my retroarch controls with a ps3 controller.
It’s not an official ps3 controller but it works with everything apart from retroarch. The direction controls work on both keyboard and joypad but nothing selects/enters on either keyboard or controller.
I seen that the keyboard is suppose to be X to enter but not working but tab+x is how I open the retroarch menu. Can anyone help please. -
