Please help me understand my Retropi's speed issues in EmuStation
-
Hi all,
So I'm just now really getting into this whole Retropie business and having a blast with it. I'm noticing though that when I put more roms and scrape more stuff for my two Pi3 systems, things start bugging up a little bit. It's way worse with my big build (64 gigs, 13 systems) than with my small build (16 gigs, 8 systems), but it's noticeable on both.
The longer startup time is one thing, but what really bothers me is that the systems will sometimes hang a little bit when I scroll through games list. Often this will just be for a second or so, but the hangs can go up to five seconds. Is everyone else experiencing this? I assume it comes with having lots of roms and scraped materials. I have tons of scraped videos in pretty high quality (standard videos from the xml scraper). Is that right? Is there anything I can do to get the gamelist navigation to go more smoothly again? These hangs are really irritating.
Any help you can provide I would be grateful for!
Thank you.

Yep. You can re-encode them to a lower quality but honestly the fact that something with a native res of 240p being recorded as "hd" is a waste of space imo. Unless it's a 3d game I guess.

@herb_fargus Thank you, harb. So it may be an issue with having too much scraped stuff, huh? I wonder how that explanation matches up with what I've just discovered: namely that if I leave the Pi on in EmuStation for a while, the hangs go away. Now I can scroll without them. Should that tell me anything about what's going on? A ram issue?

@jenslyn87 I'm probably the wrong person to ask about it as I'm a bit out of the dev loop with ES but possible it's caching them while you scroll for the first time so it doesn't have as much to reload when you continue scrolling but that's just a guess. I've just always kept my lists small cause full sets just get overwhelming to me.
