So with the new Star Wars Battlefront 2 debacle. Anyone else here disappointed with the industry?

The last next gen game I was really excited about was The Witcher 3 and i probably wasted well over 200+ hours on that game.

Is EA screwing up something new ? That's the worst game company ever, and coming from someone who played games like simcity 5 or warhammer online, that's 100% objective. Perhaps EA sport is somehow better, i don't know, simulation sport games are something i never had fun with, and i think selling a yearly update 60 bucks is thievery anyway.

I'm not disappointed by the industry, i'm just disappointed by some company. I have been playing on my switch for months, already bought ~20 games on it, had fun with all of them, can't say the same about my ps4 which is starting to get dusty.

I used to play mostly modern games, but the business model for games over the last 5-10 years has turned me into a retro gamer.

I bought a ps4 thinking it would last me the console generation. Along came the pro, which worked a lot better for some games. I sold my ps4 and am not planning to buy the Pro anytime soon.

You have to wait years if you want a 'complete edition' of a game. Then there are micro transactions, preorder dlc, lootboxes, unfinished games that need lots of patches,..

Maybe I will stick with retrogaming forever. There are still so many high quality games I need to play. :-) Also the old games have a charm these new, hyper realistic games miss.

I'm disappointed with the gaming industry since Destiny. I admit that I got caught by the hype train back then and pre-ordered the collectors edition. It was fun to play until they announced that the (included) season pass only was for the first 2 dlcs. And I never was satisfied with the amount of content they had, so I refused to buy the last 2 dlcs.
I even was not impressed by any of the announced next gen games back then, that I lost contact with most of my online friends because they all got an Xbox One early.
I finally decided to get one myself when Metal Gear Solid 5 was released. To me the MGS series was a system seller. I spontaneously bought a GameCube when I heard about MGS Twin Snakes (I really like the the PSOne version), then I got a PS2 when MGS3 was announced (couldn't afford one earlier) and played MGS2 beforehand. I even just got a PS3 just because of MGS4 and that's one of only 2 games I own for that platform.
I was disappointed by MGS5 tho and since then I only got 4 triple A titles for the Xbox One. Hitman, Mass Effect Andromeda, Ghost Recon Wildlands and The Division. I was excited for Hitman (which is OK as a full game but the episodic release made it kinda boring. I stopped after the 3 episode and finished it just recently with all episodes in a row) and Mass Effect (I don't even want to talk about that piece of...), Wildlands was a total surprise to me when I played the beta because gameplay wise it was the better MGS. And I only got The Division because I was bored and it was on sale.

So I have no personal experience with all that loot box stuff because the games that have that are nowhere near interesting enough to me to even care.

If I was going to spend £60 on a game I wouldn't expect to fork out more for anything. Unfortunately scrapping every last penny possible from the consumer is what the majority of big business is about and gaming is big big business. The guys that runs these companies have expensive tastes, maintaining helicopters, yachts etc isn't cheap you know.

Frankly, with a kid, I only use my Pi 3 anymore and my switch. I don't need anything else. Apart from indie and CD Projekt games, I don't feel excited for new games anymore. I had more fun with the mummy remastered and axiom verge on my switch than battlefield one.

Sometimes you get somes gems like Mario and the raving rabbids kingdom battle on switch from big companies (the game is awesome. Xcom in the mushroom kingdom). But it's so rare....

                Guess I'm getting old...

I don't play many modern games, but as @Solaris said, CD Projekt games are awesome for the simple fact that you get what you pay for if not more. I still remember when I first bought the Witcher for PS3 before I repurchased it on steam recently. It came with all kinds of stuff in the case and even a thank you letter and a promise of content and trust. This blew my mind and I swore I'd buy the later DLCs even though a ton of content was added that was all promised at launch. I thought this would help change the gaming industry but apparently not.

I think many companies have gotten too big and think they can mirror the mobile market with a base game that requires micro-purchases to enjoy the experience but they don't realize that the reason we own a tablet/phone AND a console or PC is because we want different experiences and expect difference environments when it comes to game investments.

I don't buy any modern games... especially not now with all the crap going on in the gaming industry. I can't believe people put up with it. I grew up in the good old DOS days, playing many shareware games that pushed the technology at the time. Now I support GOG and have been from their earlier days. They have a great business model and seem to know how to treat their customers. I don't need realistic graphics. I'm more interest in gameplay. That's why I enjoy retro-gaming on the PI so much... thousands of great games to experience. The gaming industry has gotten too much like Hollywood... more CG then storyline, but worst with how they try to milk every last cent out of you.
