My problem with playing Ms. Pac-Man on any emulator is that the d-pad and thumbsticks on any controller I've used don't seem to work well enough because of the "8-way" setup. This causes Pac-Man to not turn all the time you want him to. Since this is such a popular game I'm wondering how people manage to play it without this issue? Is there a setting, controller or arcade joystick that would work better? It's weird because I remember playing Ms. Pac-Man on the real Sega Genesis years ago and don't remember having these problems with the d-pad.

@rukawakaede Ms. Pacman, Pacman, Mr.s Do's Castle, Donkey Kong, and many others are 4 way joystick games. They did not have 8-way joysticks in their cabinets. Diagonal movements were physically impossible with the types of joysticks used. Consequentially, the logic to handle diagonal movements was never programmed into the game. There's nothing you can do. The original rom would have to be hacked to handle diagonal movements. Home versions of the games had to account for diagonal movements, so those games work fine. There's really nothing you can do other than build a control panel with a real 4-way joystick or use a gamepad that is easier to use for 4 way games.

Different topic: FBA doesn't emulate Ms Pacman well. Use MAME 2003.

@rukawakaede xboxdrv has a --four-way-restrictor flag which removes diagonal inputs. More info at: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Universal-Controller-Calibration-&-Mapping-Using-xboxdrv/

Section 2D is the relevant section on restricting directional control to four ways.
