    What is the MAME ROW?

    MAME ROW stands for MAME Random Of the Week. We randomly select an arcade game from the 0.78 MAME Reference Set to play on the week. The idea is to play games we've never played before, interact with other forum members, post hi-scores, share game strategies, fun facts, and (the most important) HAVE FUN!

    Notes:

    1. We usually post hi-scores screenshots after playing with only one credit. If you used more than one credit, please mention it on your post.

    2. There's no need to use RetroPie to join the MAME ROW! You can play it on any platform you want.

    3. Feel free to post your hi-score (or any content about the game) anytime you want on the previous rounds topics (link below).

    Every Monday we create a topic at the "General Discussion and Gaming > MAME Random Of the Week" forum section with the 3 random games to be voted. And on Wednesday we check the result.

    These "rules" are constantly being improved!

  • Initial Impressions:

    Dimahoo Holy crap! This game is fantastic. Yeah, it's a vertical shooter, but it was released in 2000, has a TON going on, and runs really well on a non-overclocked Pi 3.

    Looping is impressive for 1982. The digitized voice thanking you for inserting the coin isn't super creepy like so many other attempts at the time. That said, I can't quite figure out how to "win" at the game. I keep crashing my plane.

    TMNT 2 is really just the Play Choice 10 version of the NES game.

    I used the second ship but must confess I have absolutely no idea how I got that score as I have come nowhere near it since.

    I've not really worked out what all the pickups are.

    Pretty hectic game, and good fun!

    Wow, there's a lot to this game!

    The secret characters thing is interesting:

      1. Start from the title screen
      1. Insert Coin
      1. Enter the complete code quickly
        Code [UP] [UP] [LEFT] [DOWN] [DOWN] [RIGHT] [A] [B] [A] [B] [A] [Start]
        After entering the final button of the sequence, 8 planes are selectable instead of 4.

    I don't know what our MAMEROW rules are for this - I originally thought as it's not something the average arcade punter would know about, use of these extra ships shouldn't be permitted but then I thought it's not a DIPSWITCH thing, it was available to those in-the-know in the arcade. Just like the sequence patterns for PACMAN, if you know about them, you can get through the first few levels with relative ease.

    So now I'm thinking use of 'insider knowledge' like this is fine for the MAMEROW. If it was available on the arcade machine, without changing DIPSWITCHES, then it's probably okay?


  • @gtbfilms Thanks for testing it ! As it is not a real secret and now has been shared here I see no reason why we shouldn't allow use of it for mame row :-)

    Maybe..
    found so many games with nice artwork deserving an overlay that I ended up having quite a number of overlays in the works. Must give priority and start finalizing these.
