Is their some way of wiring the sensor bar on to the GPIO pins or with a USB?

On pc I am effectively using a dolphin bar. It is a wiimote sensor with usb connectivity. You could try making a research to see if it is compatible with raspberry pi.

@retroprogrammer i use a dolphinbar. It is awesome. Best way to have wiimotes working on the pi. Even the motion sensor works as a mouse. In advmame and dosbox you can use a wiimote as a lightgun.

I want to try and make the Wii sensor bar work with the Raspberrypi, Retropie
as I am on a tight budget right now I can't buy the dolphin bar and have to spend without going over the budget as I am still in school and can't get a full time job ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@retroprogrammer i seriously doubt you will be able to just make the original sensor bar work. All the wii sensor bar is, is some infrared leds. Maybe some resistors. Nothing more. The dolphinbar is a bunch of circuitry and code too.

I can't reiterate enough how much better an idea the Dolphinbar is, but if you're just looking to get a plain old sensor bar running, all it really takes is supplying it with 4.5V 300mA anyway you can. I assume the GPIO would output 5V, but I'm not sure. If that's the case, you'd need resistors, but I doubt you'd get more than 50mA. Alternatively, you could simply power it with three AA/AAA batteries and you'd be good to go. If all else fails, you could even light two candles about a foot apart and they'll provide the same functionality as a plain sensor bar, as all the usable data actually comes from the Wiimote anyway.

@mediamogul are you saying that I just need to connect the Wiimote and everything will work?

If the driver supports motion control, then it should. I'm simply suggesting how to power the sensor bar, which is all a sensor bar needs to operate.

If the driver can translate the g-sensor data into mouse input, then yes. However, I've used similar drivers on Windows and Mac setups before with limited success, so I wouldn't get your hopes up. One of the best purchases I ever made was my Dolphinbar. It turned a LOT of work into plug and play.

@retroprogrammer i like @mediamogul feel the dolphinbar is one of the best investments to use with the pi. And the connection of the wiimotes to the dolphinbar provides a connection 1000 times better than connection between the bluetooth and the wiimote. Works flawless.

I've connected my Wii remote to my Pi using just the built in bluetooth. Only the directional pad is working though. I've found some post on how to get the buttons to work. I haven't got work on that yet.

Wow, this is exciting. Never thought i’d be able to use my rpi as a Wii. is this really doable and can someone confirm who is running it. i have a few Qs:

                                  1. i’m happy to buy a Dolphinbar. Can i re-use all my old wii stuff? i have all kind of controllers from the old days

                                  2. From what i understand, retropie does not include any wii emulator? is the only way to go moonlight? if so, does this really work to start wii games from retropie via gamestream and use wii remotes to play via dolphinbar (connected to rpi).

                                  3. how many controllers can i even pair with retropie? is there some form of sequence (which controller is #1, #2,etc). for example, i may wasn’t yo use a different controller for moonlight (pc games), moonlight (wii), nes, etc. i may end up with 10 paired devices. how does each game “know” what device i’d like to use for which?

                                  4. is there any emulator supporting wii u?

Wiimote + Dolphinbar should work with RetroArch emulator cores as of the latest releases of RetroPie and RetroArch.
