Raspiboy Salvageable?
-
Solved with a Starbucks gift card.
Turns out it's the perfect width to jam into the dual contact fpc slot.
-
@herb_fargus so did you lose the original clip?
-
@edmaul69 pretty sure wife vacuumed it up
-
@herb_fargus well that sucks

@herb_fargus I guess I missed a few days reading forum posts and missed this. I am about to list my Raspiboy on Ebay as my eyesight is getting bad and would rather just use my Nexus7 for portable Pi fun. But looks like you may have already solved your issue! Great work!

@00ninja I just ordered a backup pcb too, pity!

@herb_fargus , would you mind getting another picture of your fix that shows what it looks like. I have the exact same issue you had. The black piece broke, and I tried everything to fix it. I tried taping it to keep it still, I tried a piece of thin cardboard but this was way too big to fit in with the ribbon. I then was able to jimmy in a thin piece of regular paper with it, which worked but it was an incredibly snug fit, I kept it in place by returning the tape.
I currently get a working device, with sound and everything but the screen is incredibly dark, I can make out colors and and images but it is incredibly dark.
<-- Image is locate here.
I am under the impression that where the Black piece was nothing is supposed to be jammed in on that side, so nothing is in there at all, I'm attempteing to eliminate faulty hardware.
I used the config file update located here "https://forum.recalbox.com/topic/8678/tuto-installing-recalbox-on-the-8-b-craft-raspiboy", but since i'm getting an image it seems like the config file wouldn't be the issue.
Any assistance would be incredible.

i could do this on my irda machine no problems. The biggest problem you will have is getting it off.
Putting it on will be simple hot air and solder paste would make and easy job of it. Even some flux and an iron wouldnt cause any problems once you tac it down in place. going back on. If using hot air to get it off dont stay there too long dont even attempt this with a soldering iron (getting it off) unless you know what your doing.

Actually that is the side where you need to jam things in. With dual contact fpcs that black piece pushes down a row of contacts on the back side to finalise the connection.
You should'nt need anything in the ribbon cable side as when you jam something in the back side it will essentially crimp the ribbon cable in place.
I stupidly tried using a hand soldering iron for a more permanent fix with a new fpc but as mentioned above that was a terrible idea due to my lack of skills/tools. I definitely needed a heat gun as the mounting pads were under the plastic so there isn't a possible way to hand solder without melting the sides of the fpc. Needless to say I broke it beyond repair in my attempts to fix it so I ordered a new pcb.
Honestly if you can find a proper fitting piece of plastic to jam in the back without damaging the fpc / make sure to have the ribbon cable in place first it could work, otherwise you may just have to order a new pcb.
At least I learned something from it and hopefully that knowledge can save you some headache!

well at least you gave it a try!
