More annoying MAME questions!

Should I use a rom that is the exact version ie. 0.139 or is it better to download a newer one like 0.164 and run it through clrmamepro to change it too 0.139?
-
Is there a preferred emulator to start with i.e. I was looking at lr-mame2010 due to the fact it runs the most current set, whatever doesn't work I will then move down to lr-mame2003 etc etc.
Any other mame advice is welcome

exact version if you can find it! however either should work, but former is less effort.

mame2010 is experimental (lots of stuff doesn't work) which is why it doesn't come pre installed and is labelled as such. mame2003 is well supported, libretro-based, and my personal preference.

Excellent .78 ROM it is , and if it fails to work on that what's your second choice, just tapping into your experience as I have zero!

@thrussmeister if it fails to work, fix it :) because it works, for sure. loads use it. you can get a full 0.78 set on the most popular torrent site, in 2 parts.

I could also possibly look at mame4all-pi or lr-imame4all. The specs look decent on the Zero but if you experience performance issues they cover a good number of the old school classics and are probably the fastest running emulators.
I haven't look at the 0.78 ROMs to know what it has that I am currently missing. I can imagine they have a few classics that would polish my list.
FBA has always ran decent if it covers the games you want to play.

If you plan to use arcade analog controls (spinner, trackball), you can get both of these working very well in AdvanceMAME. Also, vector games can be played at the native resolution of your display using AdvanceMAME so they can look nice and clear. That aside, I second lr-mame2003 for all of the working features as well as retroarch shaders as a first choice.

Yes that's true, AdvMAME is way more flexible than I ever thought and it's a staple system for me now in addition to the others. My plan is definitely to bump up to lr-mame2003 but I have everything working perfectly right now and really need to see what I am missing between the two that would motivate me to build a new set from scratch and sort it as I don't like dumping a full set when I will play only a fraction of them.
@thrussmeister There's a UK based website that has the current version of MAME and also what they call a rollback torrent. You can rollback to ANY version of MAME with a few clicks. It's extremely slick for RetroPie that supports so many different version sets.
