I am trying to change the default mappings on my 8Bitdo F30 pro controller for this game.
What I am wanting to do is just the following:

Y button on the controller to map to the left cannon to "Fire" towards the right side of the screen (facing the player)
X button on the controller to map to the Middle Cannon to "Fire" straight up(Facing the player)
A button on the controller ot map to the Right Cannon to "Fire" towards the left side of the screen (facing the player)

I know how to change the inputs in Mame using the Tab key, but can not get it to fire in the directions I want in corresponding to the buttons mentioned. I have been successful in Vanguard and Robotron, but just cant get this game mapped.

Any suggestions guys would be great appreciated?

      Thanks!

Not sure what you mean by firing in a particular direction. Missile Command fires wherever you position the crosshair (with a trackball). The three fire buttons merely select which cannon is firing. If you are using a gamepad, you would have to position the crosshair with a joystick/dpad.

Typical strategy would suggest that you should fire from the cannon closest to your crosshair to minimize the shell timing to detonation. Obviously, lead time is a factor so if you position the crosshair on the far right of the screen, the left and middle cannons will take longer to get their shells to the location. The Right cannon would be preferable if you have not led the inbound missile very much.

Additional strategy changes due to ammo may play a role too if you can accommodate the distance to target.

Thanks maybe I am not wording this smoothly. I am moving the crosshair, but I want to select the particular cannons in the mappings listed above. Can that be accomplished? It makes it easier for me to play as it corresponds better with what I am seeing.

@tigerinatlanta Yeah, you map each cannon a button, but the direction has nothing to do with it. If you press the button for LEFT cannon, it will fire from LEFT CANNON no matter where you position the crosshair. In other words, you might have the crosshair directly above the Right cannon, but if you press LEFT, it will fire from LEFT and travel all the way across the screen. That is just how the game works. You decide, based on which button you press, which cannon fires at the crosshair.
