We are currently in the process of creating a retropie-based diy handheld console. It would be nice to show things like the battery-level and other informations on the screen as an overlay. Is someone able to point us in the right direction? A python-based solution would be preferable, but everything else would also do the trick. Some RetroPie/Linux APIs or libraries? Maybe a starting point for us to begin?

Note: We do not need help with the coding. We just have no clue how to bring an overlay to retropie and where to start.

Just for kicks and giggles? I'd be interested in seeing the hardware.

Minty pi has done some nice tweaks on their build that do what you describe

If you read the documentation it will answer 99% of your questions: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/
