Need help with MAME (reading did not help)
-
I did do a search and there are so many threads about MAME. The overall answer I have found seems to be to put them in the Arcade folder and try all of the other emulators. Here is my problem, the roms are in the arcade folder, the roms do show up and I have tried all 5 of the loaded emulators (fbalpha, mame2000, mame2003, mame4all & pifba). None of them work and I have tried all 5 of them on multiple roms. Anyone have any suggestions? I am dying to play the Simpsons Arcade game that I probably haven't played in close to 25 years.

There are indeed a ton of threads about MAME and FBA setup, but really the only info you need for RetroPie is covered here. Most noteworthy is that each version of MAME or FBA requires a specific ROM set to function. For example, lr-mame2003 needs ROMs from the 0.78 MAME ROM set. Using random versions of ROMs with random arcade emulators rarely ever works.

Thank you. So how do I know what rom set I have? They were all downloaded as "DOS Collection"

There's so many sets out there that odds are whatever you've downloaded is not going to be compatible. You need to either seek out a known compatible ROM set for the emulator you wish to use, or seek out the most current ROM set and 'rollback' set to build a compatible set for your chosen emulator.

@jbryan1984 Which part of this is causing confusion?
If MAME doesn't load a rom, you have a rom/emulator mismatch.

no, that would never be the right answer :) just to clarify for anyone else searching for threads who turns up this one! as said, https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Arcade has you covered.

My advice : delete the posts, ban the posters.

if your looking for roms use the following in google cant post links to sets
depending on what set your looking for
MAME 2000 Reference Set
MAME 2003 Reference Set
MAME 2010 Reference Setect.
I personally put the roms in the emulator folder they should be in.
like
/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-libretro/mame2003/
/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-libretro/mame2000/ect

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I read somewhere rom set 0.78 seems to work the best. So far just tested the Simpsons game. It works but you can only pick Marge? It says Simpsons 4 players so I am guessing that has something to do with it?

Specifically, it works with lr-mame2003, which is the default MAME emulator in RetroPie. Keep in mind that if you ever change your emulator you'll need to obtain the corresponding ROM set or you'll have the same issues.

It does. What you want is the Simpsons 2 Player ROM. Player one and two can then freely choose their character.
