n64 emulator settings force changed pi resolution

How to replicate the problem:

i overclocked the pi following the instructions in the guide above

next, after rebooting, load up super smash brothers and mess around with plugins to find the best looking and optimized plugin

start messing around with video settings and change default video mode with the "mupen64plus-gles2n64" to DMT-4

when the screen turns off and turns on again, realize it kind of looks like shit and try to switch it back by guessing it was CEA-1

when the screen turns off and turns on again, realize that not only has the emulator resolution has changed, but the pi resolution has changed too.

everything from boot, to splash screen; even emulation station now appears smaller and i don't know how to reset back to the original resolution

@wingman626 Use the RASPI-CONFIG from the RetroPie menu and change the resolution back, then reboot.

i've tried that already with no luck
the resolution within the black bar will change, but it wont show the full screen

the smaller Res i go, the more the image gets cut out within the black bars (kind of like enlarging an image, or zooming in with your phone by using two fingers)
and the highest Res it will go (1920x1080 at 60hz) will not display the entire image
