Switch to desktop with CLI (not startx)

I do not find a clear answer to this here or elsewhere. I exit emulationstation, to get some roms. Rather than walking away to my windows box to WINSCP I want to just switch to the desktop environment and hit the web. The following do not work for me with or without sudo;
sudo systemctl start lightdm
startxI am trying to learn Linux so do not want to use shortcut keys, or a pre-written script (I will learn a script though). What am I doing wrong?

Did you install the desktop environment on your system ? As noted in the https://retropie.org.uk/docs/FAQ/#where-did-the-desktop-go, you need to install the Pixel DM from the script, then exit ES and execute
startxonly.
