This chronicles my initial installation of Retropie to a Model 3B,

I formatted the stick and put the folder retropie, ejected it then inserted to the RP3. It then loaded the sub folders, ejected from pie then back to load the ROMs into the appropriate folders.
Back to the RP3 and it loads the ROMs without a hitch and then I remove the stick from the pie.
Trouble is now that stick is like a phantom. Windows 10 reacts with the tone of a connection but there is nothing listed for that drive except a "driver error" in the device manager that is not present when it is not attached to any computer I try.
I did try a different stick with the expected result and not what I experienced the first time.

Is this something that's happened to others before? I didn't see a previous thread with this problem.

      Thank you

sounds like your memory stick just failed. It happens, and probably has nothing to do with retropie or the raspberry pi. just coincidence.
