How do you run XEX files in Atari 800?

According to the docs the emulator supports the executable XEX/BIN format, but I can't for the life of me work out how to run one. If you try to launch it from Retropie you get a black screen, and if you hit F1 and try to use the "Run Atari Program" menu option, files in the XEX and BIN formats don't show up in the file list. What's the trick here?
(In Atari800WinPlus I just select "Load Executable" but obviously that's not an option either in Retropie or in the Atari 800 menus.)

@spudsmctoole Answering Your Own Question From Six Months Ago Department: it turns out that my ATARI800.CFG file stipulated a default game cartridge, and this was overriding the presence of the XEX file. Remove that line and all is well :)
