      Having painstakingly figured these out by trial and error, I figured I may as well share the info with everyone as I can't just upload the patched auto-starting ROMs.

      If you don't want to permanently modify your ROM files you can just choose the cartridge type from the list below whenever you want to play the game, and ignore everything else in this post.

      But if you want to patch your own ROMs so that they auto-launch every time - it only takes 5-10 minutes to do all 97 - launch any game from Emulation Station, then hit F1 to get into the Atari menus and choose Cartridge Management.

      From there choose Create Cartridge From ROM Image, then navigate to your ROMs folder (you only need to do this once per session). From where you start it should be [Retropie] then [roms] then [atari5200].

      Select your game ROM, then select the cartridge-type option from the list below. Save your ROM - if you just hit Enter without choosing a new name it'll overwrite the existing ROM, which is tidy but make sure you've made a backup of your 5200 ROMs folder beforehand in case of errors.

      Repeat the process as many times as you like for other ROMs. They'll now boot directly from the Emulation Station menu every time.

      (The same process also works for Atari 800 ROMs, incidentally, but is much easier for those as they're pretty much always the first option so you don't need a list.)

      So here's the list:

      Activision Decathlon: option 5 (in this case, "One chip 16KB 5200 cartridge")

        @spudsmctoole
        For a few games, my list was slightly different than yours, maybe we have different roms?
        I went through each game one by one, and I just wanted to add my list
        Thank You to spudsmctoole for doing this. It motivated me to do it too, my list is almost identical except for Blue Print, Galaxian, Gorf, Missile Command, Qix, Robotron, Space Invaders.

        I also added the actual cartridge type title next to each game, to avoid confusion.
        The titles with a "^" in front are titles that spudsmctoole didn't have listed, I think they're all protos/demos.
        The titles with a "~" in front are titles that differed in cartridge type for me, from the ones spudsmctoole had listed above.

          Going to give this a go maybe this weekend. Great bit of help. Do you know what set your roms are from?

            I've been wanting a simple launch-from-cartridge interface for classic Atari 8-bit for some time. But can this be done to emulate the behaviors of an Atari XE? That's what I had as a kid. I sure would love to play the XE Blue Max, and launch any 8-bit home computer cartridges from ES.

              What about the Atari 800 E.T. Phone Home. I can't seem to get that one to work at all.

                @TPR Super late reply, but this is one game that is known to fail if you have SIO acceleration turned on. Try turning it off and see if that works.
