      Repro steps:

      • Get Battle Mania Daiginjou for Megadrive/Genesis:
        CRC 312FA0F2
        MD5 1FFE5B490CDDEB691E3ADD6947024F83
        SHA1 FBCF7E899FF964F52ADE160793D6CB22BF68375C
      • Add it to your megadrive rom folder (mine is on a NAS, haven't tried it with roms on usb stick or SD card)
      • Try to browse to the Battle Mania Daiginjou entry in the Megadrive system
      • -> Emulationstation crashes and you return to the shell

      Retropie 4.3 on a Raspberry Pi 3

@cosmo0 Is there anything in the log file (/home/pi/.emulationstation/es_log.txt) ? What's the name of the ROM ?

@cosmo0 Works fine here. Try re-transferring the rom and also trying from sd/usb. I'm using the translated rom I patched which was originally from the no-intro set. I Suggest you patch your game with the translation.

          From the readme:
"There are also numerous hacks and one damaged file circulating around the
internet. This patch will properly overwrite all the hacked versions that
I've encountered, but not the damaged file. It will also revert the 1995
version back to the superior 1993 edition."

I'm using the stretch-version of retropie with genesis plus gx emulator and latest emulationstation. All the components I built from source..retroarch/es/emulator/etc..like yesterday

If emulationstation crashes as soon as the game is shown, i doubt it is related to the rom itself, most likely a buggy image (try deleting it).

Thank you all for your replies.

              @mitu
Nothing in the logs... after crashing, on the console I have terminate called after throwing an instance of 'char const*'.

The ROM name is Battle Mania Daiginjou (Japan).md. Your intuition was right, renaming it stops ES from crashing... (it works with BattleMania 2.md and BattleMania Daijingou (Japan, Korea).md)

Creating an empty text file with this exact file name also makes ES crash, so I did not try to download another rom version.

Can anyone try the same rom name ?

Just tried it and I cannot reproduce the problem

                pi@retropie:~/RetroPie/roms/megadrive $ file 'Battle Mania Daiginjou (Japan).md'
Battle Mania Daiginjou (Japan).md: Sega MegaDrive/Genesis raw ROM dump Name: "BATTLE MANIA 2 "

I can launch the game and it works fine.

                  This is really weird.

The file is not in gamelist.xml, and I'm using Chicuelo theme, but it behaved the same when I was using ComicBook.

Is there any way to have more debug info?

I run Retropie 4.3 and I did not update anything. How do I know the ES version ?

@cosmo0 When you open the start menu, it shows the version.

I have tried to update it through retropie-setup but it's still the same version.

I got the same crash with another game in another system: Alex Kidd in Shinobi World (USA, Europe).sms. Renamed it to Alex Kidd in Shinobi World (USA).sms and the problem went away.

The only common thing I found is that they both don't have either image or video, in the middle of other games that do. My current theme (Chicuelo) displays both image and video.
