People who overclock the current RPi 3 still hit somewhere between 1.4-1.6 GHz, with a fan. That speed increase doesn't make a big difference in terms of emulator support, in case you were wondering. N64 is still not tenable.I wish I could get my 3 over 1.4. Anything past 1.35 ghz spits out memory errors during cpuburn. Even so N64 emulation seems to have bigger problems than simply throwing enough raw power at it.

But then again I have a horrible pi addiction. I need help.
I think we both need help. LOL

This looks cool, I might look into it.

Have one in my hands already thanks to the BuyAPi.ca folks who ship all their gear from here in Ottawa, and offer a pick up for local orders. I spotted the new product first thing this morning and they happened to be on my way this afternoon to pick up the kids. Let's see if my wife notices the purchase on our credit card :)
I'm an intermediate user I suppose... but one question before I check it out tonight: is this as simple as swapping the card from my current Pi into my new 3B+? I figure I'll run an update and then a backup before I pull the card.
If it's that simple, I can try tonight and see if there's any difference in N64. My son plays one of the Star Wars games which sputters a bit, and the audio really isn't worth listening to at all. Any improvement there is where I'd look for a quick test.

I was looking at ordering one just a moment ago until I read it needs the latest version of raspian for the WiFi chip to work.
With retropie still being Jessie then surely this will not work.
I'm curious and now holding off purchase until someone can confirm if the WiFi works on retropie. -
@ohmycommodore I don't think its that easy.
You'll have to use a different version of Retropie that is still in beta.

How does the PoE header give us anything powering through the GPIO doesnt already? Does it provide greater power to the USB ports than the old 3B? And why was it not integrated into the onboard ethernet jack?

You need more cake in your diet instead lol.

I'm going to skip this one. I see no real point in buying one. I've been using my custom PC more for emulation instead of using the pi. So until they release a pi that can run N64 and other later systems at full speed, I'll hold out.
I have a custom PC as well i use for arcade emulation only which only costed me 100$ and then there is my 900$ custom gaming PC for everything else and i still use my Pi as well for retro gaming.

Hello all from Paris, France.
I received today the pi3B+ ordered yesterday from Farnell website.
It won't boot with actual retropie system, I think it is due to new ethernet / new wifi chips....
In the downloads section of the raspberry foundation, you'll find a new version of noobs (yesterday's release) to make the NEW B+ work.
(New drivers ?)
I do not think Retropie is in this sdcard....
:(
I cannot say, since I need t buy an extra sd....
But I do not think so....
Is the Retropie team going to update soon ?
Thank you very much for the information.À bientôt
;-) -
@nogolem An updated image was just posted in another topic https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/16307/retropie-4-3-14-stretch-images-for-testing.

Than you very much indeed !
That is a super fast answer !
Merci beaucoup l'ami !;-)
-
My wife sent me a message saying that a "small packet" has arrived for me.....I might be working from home tomorrow ;-)
-
So other than the ethernet bump it just has a mild CPU bump as well?
I would be interested to hear if this speeds up performance much.
-
Farnel delivery system to France is sooo fast !
Less than 20h between order and delivery from England to Paris, France.
Thank you Farnell !Retropie Team roxx too !
You brits rule !!!!
Merci !

I found this power comparison between the 3B+ and all other Pi models. Just for everyone's information.

Great. Well environment be damned it looks like. Our footprints are going to grow a bit. ;(

Away for the weekend and brought the new Pi along... after a quick bit of "tweaking" to my original black plastic case. Four new pins (power over ethernet pins, I've learned) on the 3B+ mean that particular case didn't fit straight away.

Does someone know if the 3B+ still comes with disabled USB boot like the 3B does? The 3B can be set to USB boot once via an OTP bit (One Time Programmable) which can be checked (not set, don't worry) by this command:
vcgencmd otp_dump | grep 17
On the 3B, the output is
17:3020000a
if USB boot is enabled. Though I don't know if it's the same value for the 3B+.A friend of mine wants to know if the bit is set on the 3B+ or not.

So, just some thoughts and observations on my Pi 3 B+
Good overclocking. Able to get 1500mhz on the CPU and 500 on the GP at a 2 overvolt stable. This allows Mario 64 to run pretty well without audio cutting out, but other games still struggle like Paper Mario. Some SNES games now run smooth with shaders that didn't before.
The Stretch Beta runs really well on this one.
Networking is way faster, scraping takes about 1 second per title now. Woot!
Bluetooth seems to be faster, cutting out the lag (and the overclock helps) with playing with 8bitdo controllers (the SN30pro is what I tested).
Other than that, not much else really stands out to me.
I like it.
