"Nostalgic" theme for Retropie EmulationStation by SuperMagicom.
I have always admired the "Nostalgia" platform videos made by Viking for Launchbox and wished they could be used on Retropie. Since EmulationStation does not support platform videos, I decided to try creating a theme using static images of them.
All credit for the visual aesthetic goes to Viking. My contribution is the code to display the images as an ES theme and align the video snaps for each system individually. It was a lot of work but I am pleased with the results and I hope you will be too!
The following system folders are currently supported...
- Amstrad CPC
- Apple 2
- Atari 2600
- Atari 5200
- Atari 7800
- Atari Lynx
- Atari ST
- All Games

- Nintendo BSX Satellaview

- ZX Spectrum
More systems may be added in the future.
Marquee graphics are supported for arcade-based systems if they are present in your gamelist.xml file.
Download the theme from Github and move the unarchived "nostalgic" folder and all of the contents to
If this folder does not exist you may create it.
IMPORTANT: I recommend keeping EmulationStation's VRAM setting at 80. This theme uses 1080p images for each system and the WSOD (White Screen of Death) fix seems to only work correctly when VRAM is at 80.
- Viking for his amazing Launchbox creations
- RetroNi for his logo sets
- mattrixk for his ES-Toolkit app
- rookervik for his Theme Helper app

Waoooh!!!! really nice!!!! Thank you for sharing this amazing work.
This is a VERY clean theme. I might be using this one. You even have a mega drive and a genesis logo. That's nice to have. Are you adding a "mega CD" for Japan/Pal? (I'm USA so I'm not affected)

@supermagicom very clean and simple. I love it! Great work!
@sgtjimmyrustles There is no platform video for Mega CD that I can base the background image on. I might be able to hack something together eventually though.

Love it! Great job :)
It looks great, just missing MS Dos. I'd cobble something together if you have that background image at the right size.
@sgtjimmyrustles I haven't really added any of the computer systems yet but I will.
@sgtjimmyrustles I added support for the pc (ms-dos) folder.
Wow, that was fast. Appreciate it man!
Just tried it out @SuperMagicom and it works great! Love the PC you used.

@SuperMagicom How about Daphne? I think more than a few of us have Dragon's Lair or Space Ace up and running. . .
Great theme! I can't wait to try it out.
@caver01 Added Daphne. Should work the same as arcade so if you have marquee images in your gamelist.xml they will display on the cab.

Good Morning! here is WSOD, is it because of the configuration of the scrap image I'm using?
@ande-rocha Make sure the VRAM is set to 80 in the EmulationStation settings.

the setting is correct, set to 80 :(
Great work! I really want to test here!
Fyi, small bug noticed. If you do the whole "Change name of system" for the TG16 and Genesis, the genesis one will not work. You have to manually make a folder for genesis.

How can I change to that theme in ES? I copied the .zip into the direction but how can I tell ES to install and use it?
Thanks in advance!
Appreciate your work, thank you :)
