MAME ROW stands for MAME Random Of the Week. We randomly select an arcade game from the 0.78 MAME Reference Set to play on the week. The idea is to play games we've never played before, interact with other forum members, post hi-scores, share game strategies, fun facts, and (the most important) HAVE FUN!
Notes:
-
We usually post hi-scores screenshots after playing with only one credit. If you used more than one credit, please mention it on your post.
-
There's no need to use RetroPie to join the MAME ROW! You can play it on any platform you want.
-
Feel free to post your hi-score (or any content about the game) anytime you want on the previous rounds topics (link below).
Every Monday we create a topic at the "General Discussion and Gaming > MAME Random Of the Week" forum section with the 3 random games to be voted. And on Wednesday we check the result.
These "rules" are constantly being improved!

This is why I love the randomness of the MAMEROW!
Where else would you choose to play a game where the leading character is a camp Freddy Mercury lookalike, with a gloriously ill-advised sound-track of Bach's Toccata and Ravel's Bolero, with just the right number of notes entirely wrong, while ripping off Rolling Thunder wholesale?!
Awesome stuff!
Space Fortress appears to be the sort of game you might get if you attempted to make an Asteroids clone, but replaced the unique selling point of a beautiful vector display with pixel graphics. The speech is pretty good for 1981 though.
Hanagumi Taisen Columns seems like a good choice for a high score competition.
I think I'll vote for Hanagumi Taisen Columns this week.
Edit: Having had some time to play these today, I've changed my mind - despite several games I've still no idea why my opponent keeps beating me on Hanagumi Taisen Columns - every now and then lots of coloured dice fill my screen and I swiftly die.
So for the pure campness of it, and the fact all the enemies seem to be based on that motorcycle cop out of the Village People, my vote's now going to Rough Ranger!

Rough Ranger's controls are awful, but the Columns game only shows up in the top left of my screen. I'm going with Rough Ranger too.

You know, I genuinely thought Iād go for Rough Ranger even though the Power of Pew looked strong with Space Fortress at first glance. After having a go at both (and blatantly ignoring any other option) I now pledge my re-allegiance with the Pew Pew and will vote for Space Fortress. Pew was the deciding factor here, as this was a well matched week (apart from the other option of course).

Awesome stuff! It seriously is! Wow - I was not expecting this to even exist :) Some parts are so bad it hurts (like the way enemies "appear" through the doors, or the evil laughter sample that tries to copy the laughter sample from Rolling Thunder) but hey, it has simultaneous 2-player co-op. That sounds interesting.
I hadn't heard of this game, and I'll likely add it to my list. Thanks MAME ROW!

This week's winner is Rough Ranger

Quite tricky, but I managed though the first level after memorising the enemies. The green grenade throwers are a pain.
23400 is my best so far.
