Noob here. I wanted a desktop so loaded PIXL. All looked good. It added a menu item under PORTS. When I select it, a few moments of black screen then it just goes back to the emulator screen. Any ideas how to get the desktop to work. This is the latest image of Retropie.

      Thanks.

@winkdot What happens when you run startx manually, after existing ES ? (https://retropie.org.uk/docs/FAQ/#where-did-the-desktop-go). Do you get any error messages ?

I updated the packages (I think, I have tried lots of things). Re-installed Pixel. The reinstall looked quite a bit different. It even installed Chromium. After that I launched the desktop from PORTS in the menu and wow... it worked. Everything I tried worked well. My kb worked, wireless worked, bluetooth worked. Looked great. The folks that work on all this software do a great job!!

BTW before this when I entered startx at the command line I got:
          /usr/bin/x : not found
          giving up
unable to connect to X server ; connection refused
          server error

This is my first time playing with a Pi and I like it :)

Thanks for the replies to this message.

@winkdot I installed the Pixel desktop on one of my recent builds and it failed the first time too. I simply tried again and it found some things it must have missed the first time around. I chalked it up to network issues, but I wanted you to know you are not the only one that has had to try twice.

@caver01 there were some issues with stretch but I believe they were addressed recently. Don't remember if it was before or after the beta though. A simple update to the setup script before install should address it anyways.

For the Stretch image I found myself having to do it manually:

                sudo apt-get install raspberrypi-ui-mods
                sudo apt-get install xinit
                startx

Then fine from the ports menu from then on.
