      There are a number of 4 player arcade games where the joystick position determined which character you played - Vendetta, The Simpsons, Sunset Riders, TMNT and Gauntlet spring to mind. (Although Gauntlet II changed this so each player position could choose whichever character they wanted).

      I thought I was stuck always playing the first character on my single player PICADE, until I read that for all the above games, there is also a 2 player version of the ROM, which was for 2-player cabs, and thus has a character selection screen added to allow each player to choose whichever character they like.

      I was wondering if there is a definitive list of all these 4P games which have a corresponding 2P ROM version, and if not, perhaps I should make one?

      Would it be useful? Any suggestions for other 4P games where a 2P ROM is also available?

      Edit: Ah, I see this has already been discussed in this thread:

      Sorry.

        Here's a few that aren't on that list.

        aafbd2p - All American Football
        offroadt2p - Ironman Ivan Stewart's Super Off-Road
        passshtb - Passing Shot
        redlin2p - Redline Racer

        Also, I believe there's a few games to where 1/2/3/4+ player variants can be selected from the service menu, but I've never looked into it. All this talk makes me wish there was an easier way to select players for 'Rampage' without having to remap every time.

          I made a Player 3 controller box that I plug into the USB port I put on the front just to play Ralph the Wolf in Rampage without hassle.

          I am developing a theory that Player 3 has the best characters;
          Ralph the Wolf (Rampage)
          Bart (the Simpsons)
          Donatello ( TMNT) and TMNTII

            Ha! I really think you're on to something there. For 'Rampage', I play Ralph most of the time myself. It's a shame he was always the one snubbed when they needed to cut a character for the home ports. Of course the Lynx version actually threw us a curve ball by including a fourth character, Larry the rat. I've experimented with just about all the ports, looking for a good alternative that allows character selection and while several of them are very impressive on a technical level, especially on the Lynx, Master System and Atari 2600, nothing beats the arcade original.
