i'm having quite the opposite problem of most people on the forums... i had retro pi all set up working great on a old hp laptop and thought "hey this would be cool on big screen"(sound working on laptop speakers at this point). plugged into TV and sound worked right away no issue. after unplugging the HDMI, i get no sound. if i plug HDMI back into laptop sounds there even after multiple unplug and plug ins so it seems like its stuck on hdmi.

i can conclude this is a issue with my retropie because watching videos on youtube work fine on chrome (audio from speakers when HDMI is not plugged in, sound through hdmi when plugged in). more proof is that if a launch kodi through retropie i get no sound but if i launch from desktop it works fine.

retro pi and all of its packages are fully up to date as of 5/6/2018, and i compiled it twice to be sure.

so any ideas on what is hanging up retropie from picking the correct audio source? the solution im looking for is one where i can use it with HDMI audio and with Built in speakers and headphones. if that means switching manually i can make a script not a big deal but i confident something just needs changed in a config that of which i don't know where.

      little bit of info
ubuntu 17.10 (same issue) upgraded to ubuntu 18 (still issue)
i3 4th gen cpu in cheap HP laptop
pulseaudio is installed by default with ubuntu so yes its installed
no sound from anything including menu clicks without HDMI cable plugged in ; sound only comes out TV when connectedbolded text

alright so i found a work around for now, install pavucontrol via

        sudo apt-get install pavucontrol

then run retropie and then launch an emulator, then go back to the puv control panel and select correct audio device
