PPSSPP no controls in menu but works in game

Anyone have any info to hopefully share on this, running retropie 4.4.1 with a B+. Using Xin-Mo 2 player controller, when mapping the dpad/buttons in controller setup... buttons work but navigating menus does not. Having to use a keyboard to navigate and of course exit. Mapping a button to bring up the menu works fine as well. Funny thing is joystick works in the games perfectly.... Don't want to have to use a keyboard to exit the emulator every time.
Having to revert to lr-ppsspp is not very desirable.
