With a spare Raspberry Pi, 1600x1200 monitor, and gamepad, I thought I'd have a go at vertical gaming...

I started with a backup image of what's running in my bartop
      I added display_rotate=3 to /boot/config.txt
      rebooted
removed the in-game overlays, since there's no space for them
      recreated the scanline configs

...and it's all working pretty well, except for one thing. The EmulationStation themes I've tried so far are all optimized for horizontal displays, and for the most part didn't work well with a vertical display. Video previews are right out the window, for example.

Anyway, before I spend all night trying anything and everything, I thought I'd check here - anyone running a vertical setup, and if so, which ES theme are you using?

Just happened to see this is my YouTube reccomended. I haven’t watched it but it’s the first I’ve seen. So maybe it will get you started.

@chuckyp : Thanks for that - looks interesting! I'll give it a try later once I get back from work.

@chuckyp - I'm with you 100%. The only problem is that I left the Pi powered off, so I've no way to do anything until I get home :-/

@andrewh I hope you realize I was just joking. I did watch the video and it looks like a solid vertical theme that should do what you are looking for. With one being made now I’m sure other options will follow soon.

@chuckyp Yep... I got that you were joking. Still, if I had left the Pi on, I could have Remote Desktop connected to my windows PC and SSH'd into it...

On the bad side, it doesn't look like this theme has been released yet. I checked the channel of the guy who made it (linked from the video you shared), and he's got comments disabled on his video of it :-(

No big deal, though - I'm not in a crazy rush or anything like that. Might even have a go at hacking up my own modification of one of the existing themes, if I get time.

@andrewh reading the comments of the video the creator mentions that the theme is available through “ES Theme Downloader”.

@andrewh I know it is not what you asked for, but I saw a thread some time ago where someone used Attract Mode, as there is apparently a decent vertical theme.
