I have downloaded a set of Rom's for Advmame 3.7 (rom version 0.106) have have placed them in the following folders on my HDD ... for example

      area51.zip is located at /piroms/roms/arcade
      area51.chd is located at /piroms/roms/arcade/area51

When i try and run the game within Emulations station, the screen goes black for around 5 seconds and then just goes back the the game menu.

I have had a look at the runcommnd.log and it shows the following:

      Parameter:
      Excuting: /opt/retropie/emulators/advmame/bin/advmame "area51"
      area51.chd NOT FOUND
Error: required files are missig, the game cannot be run.

If i swop the emulator to another one of the mame emulators the game loads fine.

Any idea on how to get around this issue and get the game working in Advmame v3.7 as I have a Aimtrak light gun and it will only work with Advmame.

Are you sure area51.chd is inside its own directory named 'area51'? The paths for the ROM and CHD files should be:

        /your-rom-directory/area51.zip
        /your-rom-directory/area51/area51.chd

@mediamogul Yes the CHD is contained within its own directory called area51.

The weird thing is is that if I put all the zip and relevant CHD folders in the folder ... \roms\mame-advance they work perfectly but then the Emulation Station front end no longer shows the Arcade Icon but just a blank space

In your advmame.rc config, does the 'dir_rom' entry read as follows?

            dir_rom /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-advmame:/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade

            RetroPie v4.5 • RPi3 Model B • 5.1V 2.5A PSU • 16GB SanDisk microSD • 512GB External Drive

I had same symptom and my issue was permissions for the directory I had the CHD in. Might not be your problem but worth a look ;)

With advmame on a PC (and I assume you are on a PC..the rasp pi is NOT going to run area51 no matter how hard you try.) The chds have to be placed in it's own directory..at least by default.

                /home/user/.advance/image/kinst/kinst.chd for example

place the chd in /home/user/.advance/image/area51/ so it's full path is
                /home/user/.advance/image/area51/area51.chd to the chd

                make folders if needed...

                So what i mean is

                1. Open your advance folder
                2. Make a folder named image if one is not there
                3. Make sure your folder is name the SAME name as your chd file (without the .chd extension of course.)
                4. Place your chd file into the folder area51
                  (as mediamogul has said)
                5. Now place that folder into the media folder

so now your chd is at /.advance/image/area51/area51.chd

Now try to load the game

People want things easy...but then complain that life is boring...
