Last I checked the package for stretch was using opengl which the pi requires a desktop environment for/is experimental.

In Raspbian Stretch, it seems the main program is 'supertux2', that's why the launch script cannot find the supertux executable. You could run sudo ln -s /usr/games/supertux2 /usr/local/bin/supertux, then see if it the game starts.

Might have to build old non opengl version from source for rpi. Newer versions can be built but performance is terrible.

(We just install the packaged version. I remember when I tried a newer version back on Jessie from source. May revisit, but of course patches welcome :-) )

              Update

so i got around to trying what @mitu said to try, it does work but runs slow as hell. which i thought would happen from what @herb_fargus said it being opengl.

did try to lower the resolution but did not help it

so im going to now and to find a way to install a older version. wish me luck

so it seems that video mode set to auto does work. if i switch it to opengl. the game will not start.

so the resolution is the key. i got it to working mostly good at 720x576. at the run command and then play around in the settings. there is a small slowdown at some points but it is playable.

@exarkuniv thanks. I have an unfinished RetroPie module that builds the latest version from source so I will revisit it.

                        UPDATE
well the first level is playable, the second not so much. there is a lot in the background and even going down to 640x480 it is laggy.

not sure what else can be done at this point, unless someone knows how to put a older version back on,

                        im out of ideas

Sorry for the double post :(
On the official SuperTux website there is the new 0.60 version.
This version has been optimized for Rasperry
"We now support OpenGL 3.3 Core as well as OpenGL ES 2.0, thus enabling SuperTux to be run on the Raspberry Pi, and potentially WebGL."
Can you update the installation script to try this version? thank you :)

@hermit The installation script does not installs the game from source, it just installs the version available in the Raspbian repositories. Whenever the new version will be made available in that repo, it will be automatically updated when you're running an OS packages update. Right now, it's only version 0.5.1 that's available.

                                    Hello,

reviving this thread due to my new install not running SuperTux on a 3B (no +).

                                    Using this weekly
                                    https://files.retropie.org.uk/images/weekly/retropie-buster-4.5.18-rpi2_rpi3.img.gz

and installing SuperTux from optional package #335 succeeds, but when starting from RetroPie Ports-menu entry, system goes black and then returns to menu again. According to Raspbian repo for Buster v0.60.1 is included.

For general fuction check of the system I installed optional package #311 Giana's Return - running fine.

In raspi-config the experimental OpenGL option is installed, using LegacyGL though, as GL2/FakeKSM and GL3/FullKSM just halt the system after splash screen.

Someone an idea where for me to look?

Checking the wiki on SuperTux not much to be found there, as it is defined as experimental package there still.
                                    https://retropie.org.uk/docs/SuperTux/

                                    Thanks for your advice.

                                    cu,

@agerhard Supertux should be working - with the default configuration. I'm not using the Raspbian Buster image, but on the default RetroPie (Stretch) installation it works.
