August 2018 Game of the Month - Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse (SMS)

Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse (SMS)
Developer(s): Sega AM7
Genre(s): Platformer
No. of Players: 1
Platform(s): Genesis, Game Gear, Master System, Saturn
Captured by Illusion!
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse was originally released for the Genesis in 1990 in all regions except Europe. (They had to wait a year.) Now the game was a mild success (as much of a success as you can be in the shadow of Nintendo.)
But 1 year later, Sega had the idea to make a version for the Game Gear. And by extension - The Master System. Why they decided to make a version for their last-gen 8-bit system that got it’s ass whooped everywhere but Brazil will elude me.
But back to the game. It has similarities with the Genesis version (Mickey Mouse & Platforming.) The music not as good as the Genesis version. (Side Note: I always felt the Master System had weak audio that was tinny.)
You play as Mickey, who has to save Minnie from an evil witch named Mizrabel, who intends to steal Minnie's beauty for herself. To save Minnie, you must collect the 6 rainbow gems from the 6 different levels in order to get to Mizrabel's castle and rescue your love.
So hop on Steamboat Willie and lets get going!

Game of the Month Challenge
The challenge for this month is Suicide Mouse Your challenge this month is to play all the piano notes in Giant's Den without dying or pausing or taking damage. Not quite sure what that means, (I really have to play the game beforehand so I know what the hell I'm talking about.)
Have fun, and don't take any crap from anybody.

Can I play it on my Game Gear? (Don't worry, I have rechargeable AAs)
That's one of the few games I actually have for that handheld.
-
@obsidianspider Sure, like I said above. The master system version is just the game gear version converted to run on the master system.

I haven't really investigated stuff like this, but I've heard the SMS was very successful in Europe (so much so that Sega was competing with itself for a while in the home console market when the Mega Drive arrived).
Also, I've also heard that the NES was expensive and horribly marketed in at least England.
Anyway, I believe the reason so many Game Gear games ended up on the SMS is because it was easy to port them due to the hardware almost being identical between the two and the install base was there.

Here we go, my golden ticket.
Overall I thought the game was pretty fun, not as much as the genesis version or the remake, but still good. Some of the bosses are annoying, The chocolate bar is a rip off of the Yellow Devil from the Mega Man games. And the last two bosses (Dragon and Mizrabel) were especially annoying. Both revolve around throwing a projectile at them while dodging shit flying all over. The dragon can only be hit on his head, which makes aiming particularly difficult. And Mizrabel has these dots flying all over that take a heart each. One thing to mention; when throwing something, it will only fly when you are moving. If you are standing still (or jumping in one spot and throwing) it will drop right down, keep that in mind.
I also got all the "beat bosses with no damage" cheevos. They add nothing but were still fun to do. A lot of them popped at the wrong time though.

Honest question, how many of you actually use the art pack from my github? This goes for all the months so far.
I was thinking of not making the art packs anymore, and was instead of making this feature just that; a feature. No gimmicks.

Wow!! This month is going really fast!!
Wait until Friday, please. I'll get my golden ticket too!!
-
I have tried this game a couple times. I suck at it. Badly.

Yeah, I'll probably wait until the 1st or so to start voting.
The month is going so fast. In a week, I'll be a high school senior. I really wanted this summer to go slow so I could prolong the amount of time until I'll have to hear about school and college planning.

Same here. It's actually pretty difficult.

@obsidianspider I got to the tree boss in the woods stage. I cannot figure out how to beat him. Those leaves are brutal.
Also got to the chocolate bar boss in the candy stage and had a similar experience.

Eager to see what gets chosen for September. Hopefully it's something I can compete in. :)
-
@livefastcyyoung I've yet to decide, I might not pick something until saturday or sunday (September 1st and 2nd, respectively)
Busy with school stuff at the moment
-
Tadaaa!!
I will think about the next month game and post here soon ;)
-
[looks like I've posted my suggestion in the wrong thread, then I'm repeating it here]
My suggestion for September:
Tails Adventure (Game Gear) - it's a kind of Metroid game where the main character is Tails (yeah, that Sonic's partner).
I also suggest this achievement as a challenge, which is basically beat the game.
-
The next post will either be up today or tomorrow. I had an idea for a game to play, but I lost my copy and will probably never find it.
