Does running the “update all” script in RetroPie Setup overwrite things that I have updated from Source individually?

I want to keep my versions of FBA and other emulators straight.

@rc_cola Yes, update all will re-install every package from binary (when possible) or from source (when no binary is available). If you want to keep your source installs, then you should only update what you need.

This is something I intend to change in the near future, so that an update will update anything installed from source from source etc. Hopefully later this year. Also only updating things that actually have updates as it's not too intelligent currently.

Yes it will change almost everything even changing the .emulationstation symbolic link which some people use to put media files on USB.

Symbolic links are not supported by FAT32 partitions - which is what you're using on the USB drive. It's not the update or any other installation that 'breaks' this, it's simply unsupported.

@mitu symbolic link is on the ext4 partition. The USB mount is /home/pi/retropie. My point was that the update script changes almost everything but the fstab.

@micro-bee Care to give an example of how the update affects the .emulationstation folder ? I don't understand what you're referring to, .emulationstation is already a symlink to /opt/retropie/configs/all/emulationstation in a default install.

To keep files off the SD card I changed the .emulationstation to link else where. I did the update all option and saw it changed the symbolic link too. I guess the reasoning is to recreate a clean slate for those who have broken their existing setup.
