@spud11 @thelostsoul Thanks for mentioning the SMB 2P hack. I'll put it on my to-do list for the winter. :)
Aaaaand … done yesterday! \o/ (After having a bad cold for five days.) A very short test went well: I just started the game and jumped around with both players at the beginning of the first level.
I'll thoroughly test it with a friend this saturday – although she is a console player and has "some respect" for my upright cabinet, because she's not used to arcade controls. ;)
Take that, Pile of Shame! *defying laughter from the Pile*

@Clyde Me today. I finally got it patching right and rom is working. Now, I have to do the work and integrate it into my setup (includes custom video recording). That must be exciting playing this game together with a friend. I read in the comments there, it is harder, because you have to share resources and always wait for the other guy (which hinders on some points, especially at bowser stages). And even if one of you die, you have to restart both of you. This needs coordination and I bet it must be a lot of fun. Prepare.

@thelostsoul You could use this 0:48 video from one of the hackers himself:

The video shows an option called "respawn" to avoid that. I wonder if it's in our version of the hack … *runs to his cabinet*

@Clyde From the footage, it have different graphics and the hud is different. Could be something like a remake on a different platform. I also read about changes for "our" version and I would know if this feature was implemented. "Our" version is quite vanilla without changing anything else in the game. Sorry dissapointing you. This feature looks really cool. I also wish there would be an option for friendly fire (like in modern versions). But hey, its still great. :-)
From the title screen, you can search for "super mario bros co-op corpse grinder". EDIT: I take everything back. Our version is from corpse grinder too, i am confused now. ?!
-
@thelostsoul That makes two of us. I also noticed that that version looks different, and I searched for a way to open this "secret menu", only to find another video from Corpse Grinder where he demonstrates it without any explanation in the video or the descriptions. WTF?
edit: Well, someone with a YouTube account (not me) could ask him in the comments. ;)
-
@thelostsoul One final thought on it for today: The first of the three Super Mario Bros. videos in Corpse Grinder's YT channel seems to be our version of the hack. So, the other two videos may be newer versions that haven't been uploaded on romhacking.net (yet?)
-
@Clyde Corpse Grinder had a comment below this video saying a week ago that this version hasn't been released yet and it won't be released anytime soon. (translate the comments to English).
-
@ByteThis Thanks, that's good and bad news at the same time. Hopefully, it may be released, but we don't know when or if at all. 😕
-
@Clyde Would be sweet if it was released. Maybe he is actually still working on the hack with improvements. SMB fans need this !! haha
-
Seems he is testing with some new features and changes, but first completed the base version of the game. Now, he can experiment and edit on top of that version. Makes completely sense now. But where a shadow is, there is a source of light too. That means, we can hope for a future release. Man, I didn't know how cool the romhack scene is.
