Remote for issuing hotkey/metakey commands

Good day,
Are there any recommended remote controls which I could use with RetroPie to issue hotkey/metakey commands? I'm playing SNES Metroid at the moment, and the load/save hotkeys keep getting triggered, as this game actually routinely requires using nearly all the buttons on the SNES joypad.
If I were to use a USB wireless keyboard/touchpad, can I escape/back out of a game and get into the game select menu, or do I HAVE to use the HOTKEY+START combo to do this?

You can customize your key/button bindings as you like - globally, per-system or per-game. Look into the RetroArch controller configuration docs.
