Controller doesn’t register when launching a new game

Pi zero using 360 wired, xbone elite wired, xbone standard wired, xbone aftermarket wired controllers. When I launch a new game I have to unplug and replug the controller in for the game to register the controller. Controller is completely inoperable until done so. Not even hotkeys work.

@mitu power supply is an apple iPad supply, usb is either an otg usb mini to usb or a powered hub(happens with both), not sure what version but I downloaded it from the RetroPie site this week and followed the guide from same site. This was happening a month or two ago when I first set up but my first sd card became corrupted and I had to start over with a new card. Also, the keyboard will work but not 100% if it is plugged in at same time. That’s all the info I have at the moment since it’s not in front of me at the moment.

Looks like insufficient power with a lot of devices connected over the USB hub. Do you get the low voltage lightning bolt ? What's the rating on the iPad supply ? Note that a charger is not a proper power supply.
The Pi zero could be finicky about the HUB, especially when it draws more power for each device connected. What you can do - once you can experiment with your system - is see if the issue appears when you connect only 1 device only and progressively add new devices and check of when/if the low voltage sign appears and if the devices gets disconnected.

@mitu whether I use the hub or a single usb to mini usb otg cable it still happens. The charger is 2.4A. My end goal is to pack it in a snes controller with the wires soldered direct to the gpio pins and use a lipo with a boost converter to power it. Nothing original it’s been done many times before by others. My concern is after all that work there is no way to disconnect and reconnect the controller when it’s soldered in. It may be apples an oranges (current setup compared to end goal) but I’m using the current setup to familiarize myself with the system before making any advanced changes like power switch and programming to make is shutdown properly and the controller config programming.

As I said at the beginning, your symptoms match an inadequate power source. My advice is to get an official RPI power supply and use it for the Pi.

Phone chargers, though seemingly rated as sufficient, do not provide a stable power source which the Pi requires. It may be 5v 2.4a, but it will fluctuate. Hence why it's recommended to use a dedicated PSU rather than phone chargers, as @mitu said.

@mitu I finally tracked down the issue. When the triggers on the controller were initially set the left triggers release was set as the right triggers pull. The system was registering a constant trigger pull and mucking everything up. Thank you for your help though.
