MAME - Game opens then goes back to emulationstation

Hi everyone, I am hoping that someone can help me with this error that I am having. I have literally read everything there is under the sun about MAME, however, I still cannot get this error to resolve.

I'll give some background. I am running retropie on an Ubuntu Machine and majority of the emulators are working fine such as the NES and SNES and N64. I have just tried to run a couple of MAME games and I am unable to run them.

For example I tried to run Marvel vs Capcom Clash of Superheros, and I can see it in the game lists and I can open the file but it will not boot into the game, instead it goes back to the emulationstation game list. I have tried to use different emulators, but none have worked. I have also read the logs and there is no error message there, it says that the game has opened and that is all the information that was given. Could someone please help me!

If you had you'd know that each emulator requires a specific romset in order to work. You have the wrong romset.

Yes, I knew about the rom sets, but nowhere does it say where to find and how to install the romsets into the retropi. Once again, I hope you can help! Thanks!

It actually sort of kinda does. The docs mention:

ROMS are not included with RetroPie. Copyright law varies by country and is up to the user to determine legality.

and the forum rules are pretty clear:

DO NOT:

Ask for BIOS/ROMS/Game Images

Ask where they can be downloaded

Post links to Download Sites and/or BIOS/ROMS/Game Images (including mentioning places to download from)

Discuss Kodi addons which are designed for watching pirate/bootleg video.

How to transfer your ROMs is covered in the docs - look for the quick start section.

@Ningro have you really read the links under the Arcade section of the docs? I wrote a non-technical guide? Even the detailed technical stuff is pretty easy to follow... also if you do a quick search on here "mame roms not launching" you will see thousands of the same question being asked mainly because people have not searched like they agreed to do. Here is an example thread....

There are some very good answers with examples that complement the docs. Just remember, there is no trial and error...ever.

Hey all, Ok so I have done some more reading and I finally get what you guys mean!

I have been trying to get one of the roms to work, I have all of the right rom sets, however, I cannot get it to work as now it is asking for .keys for a specific rom. Could you please help?

@Ningro that is part of the rom so I think you still need to get the correct version of the rom for the version of mame you are running.
