BBC Micro (via MESS) for dummies?
-
We know that BBC Micro emulation can be done in Retropie, because of this two-year-old video:
My question is simply: how?
I've got AdvanceMESS installed, in the /opt/retropie/emulators/advmame/bin folder.
I've got a bunch of BBC game files (SSDs) in the /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/bbcb folder.
I've got a BIOS file (bbcbp128.zip), currently in the /opt/retropie/configs/mame-advmame/rom/ folder.
I've read the posts from spud11 here:
https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/15745/bbc-micro-emulation/9
but they're all Greek to me. (What is "Attract Mode"?) I've copied his bbcmicro.rc file into /opt/retropie/configs/mame-advmame anyway just in case it helps somehow.
Can anyone talk me through what I need to do, in complete dum-dum language, to put all the pieces together? What do I need to put in es_systems.cfg in /opt/retropie/configs/all/emulationstation? What else do I need to fiddle with?
(If I try to run a game with these settings, it goes through all the MESS warning screens and loads to the BBC boot screen, but nothing works. The keyboard is disabled and the Pi locks up so I have to pull the plug.)
Obviously if I can figure this out the knowledge should be transferable to other MESS systems, which would be handy.

@SpudsMcToole Nobody? Nobody able to give us a quick 101 guide to actually using MESS emulators? :(

I haven't tried it yet, but perhaps some of the guidance here could be converted to BBC Micro use: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3965/fairchild-channel-f/162

Also, earlier today I answered your question on how to get the Bally Astrocade running with MESS. You can use either of those examples to get just about anything else running.
