I'm running the Retropie 4.4 image downloaded from retropie.org.uk on a Raspberry PI 3 B+.
First off, this is an amazing piece of work that I have just discovered. Thank you to all that have had a hand in it.

      I built a Gamepi 2 from Araymbox
      Instructable link:
      https://www.instructables.com/id/GamePi-the-Handheld-Emulator-Console/
It uses a teensy for controls

Everything seems to work great, I'm just struggling with one thing.
      I'm using lr-Mame2003
On the game Robotron 2084, I want to use the Left stick and Right stick for Directional / Fire.
I can press R2 and get into the setup for input this game only. I was able to configure the right stick for Fire.
This was done by moving down to the correct field and pressing A, then by holding the right stick to the correct direction until it saved the field, a couple of seconds.
My problem is, when I try to do the same with the left stick, you can hold it forever and it never will save.
      What am I missing?
      Thanks in Advance.

@rocketmagnet you might consider mame2003-plus. Its input system has been updated from mame2003 in order to incorporate better support for dual stick inputs (and other input scenarios).

If you install mame2003-plus from the RetroPie-Setup "Experimental" section you will see that it has a core option that you can turn on for "Dual Joysticks" which will probably accomplish just what you're hoping for.

The thing is, I've tried everything.
Last night, I had it where the left stick worked, except it would not go up.
The right stick would open the configuration menu, in addition to firing.
Some how I got it reset, but now I can't get the left stick to work, and from what i'm reading, that's the one that should by default?
