Cannot boot to Raspbian (First Install)

Hello everyone! Today I decided to give Retro-Pie a go, but unfortunately, the tutorial at https://blog.petrockblock.com/2012/07/22/retropie-setup-an-initialization-script-for-retroarch-on-the-raspberry-pi didn't work for me.
When I tried to dosudo apt-get install -y git dialog
the terminal responded with
/usr/sbin/update-info-dir: 3: /etc/default/locale: =: not found dpkg: error processing package install-info (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 127 Errors were encountered while processing: install-info E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
I tried ignoring that and proceeded with the tutorial, but when I tried to run
sudo ./retropie_setup.sh
it came up with
Sorry - Raspbian/Debian Stretch (and newer) is not yet supported on the RPI Distributor ID: Raspbian Description: Raspbian GNU/Linux 9.6 (stretch) Release: 9.6 Codename: stretch
Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong? FYI I am running Raspbian Stretch on a Raspberry Pi 3B. Thanks in advance.
