I have built a 2 player arcade controller using a quimat diy 2 player controller kit and buttons bought from amazon and I'm have a issue getting player 2 to work
I think there must be a conflict as In retro pi
if I set player one ,player 2 buttons don't work and player 2 joystick works incorrectly as when I press up it goes left and when I go right it goes up etc..
But when I set up player 2 first then player 1 does the same thing .
So know my wiring is correct
I'm a total noob using retropi ,but I have tried various things
I've tried setting in retroach, mame but still no look .it's like it doesn't recognise the controller as having player one and player 2 together
this is a present for my son for Xmas and I'm honestly stumped
So any help would be great
      Thanks in advance

How many controllers appear in RetroArch/Emulationstation ? Is it one or two controllers ? Did you wire the buttons similarly (i.e. P1 button A wire is in the same position for P2 button B on the encoder) ?

Can it be that you meant P1 button A and P2 button A? Otherwise, they wouldn't be similar.

the problem with directions is easy your joy sticks or rotated differently. Look at them and and rotate them to match each other you. The same goes for the buttons each physical button should match the same pcb connector on each controller.

edit added a picture use the cables that plug into the joystick as a rotation guide. You really should rotate this properly or youll have issues with none ra cores

Got the player 2 joystick to work now as I had some wires wrong .I rechec ked all wires and player 2 wires are now identical to player 1
Retropi sees only 1 controller and retroarch says device type retropad and device index twin usb gamepad
Show the same in user 2 device type
User 2 binds let's me set the correct player 2 buttons
In mame with tab pressed i can only set player one not player 2

Here is a thread about an joystick encoder like the one of your kit. You may try the solution posted there by @absolut1978 .
