Carousel Image Size

I recently replaced all of the carousel images (system & collection logos) in my theme to larger, higher resolution images and now navigating has become sluggish and if I scroll too quickly they completely disappear for a while. Is there an optimal size for these files or some settings I could tweak to avoid this? I'm using the locomotion theme but slowly changing backgrounds, etc (not modifying any XML)
