Hi ! I recently ordered a raspberry pi 3 b+ to install retropie on , and I was wondering what are your recomandations for a game controller that should work just fine with any rom ? I have a 40€ max budget and i am from Romania ! I will mainly play PS1 and Nintendo roms .

@GameController Nintendo doesn't say much - there are quite a few Nintendo consoles, each one with its controller type. Are you looking for wired or wireless , 1 or 2 players ?

If you are playing PS1 games I'd recommend a playstation style controller. Actually an Xbox 360 USB controller works VERY well for just about everything, and won't break your budget either. I use an Easy MSX Xbox controller. Amazon has these for $15 USD right now.

          https://www.amazon.com/Controller-EasySMX-Joystick-Dual-Vibration-Trigger/dp/B06XB6FRPR/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1545685935&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=easysmx+controller&psc=1

System Config: Retropie 4.4 with full desktop, RPi 3B, 256gb SD, 5v 2.1A 5,200 mAH USB battery. EasyMSX controller mounted with Pimoroni Hyperpixel 4 (non touch). Also running 4.6 on a 4gb Pi 4 serving as my primary desktop computer now.

I cannot recommend the 8bitdo SF30 enough. I purchased one recently and it performs brilliantly. I'm currently using it to play Ocarina of Time and although it doesn't have a hotkey or select/start exit, it's superb. The right thumb acts as the C buttons and makes selecting items in your inventory simple. It's by no means cheap but worth every penny.

@GameController Well, the Logitech F310 will have you covered for most every console without breaking your budget.

              https://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-940-000138-F310-Gamepad-Blue/dp/B00CJAF3ME/

Personally, I love mine. Has a Home button in the middle that help you avoid accidental hotkey activation. L2/R2 buttons and dual analog sticks allow you to play all PSX games. The dual analog sticks also allow you to play the dual d-pad Virtual Boy games well enough.

If you decide on this controller, you'll probably need to buy a USB extension cord since the controller's cord length is designed for playing at a PC, though only you will know how long to get.

I can't speak more highly for the wii u pro controllers. I have 4 of them (all connected via bluetooth) and never had a problem (ok technically that's a lie - the pi's on board bluetooth caused ghost inputs e.g. randomly kicking me out of games, so you will need to buy a bluetooth dongle and disable the on board bluetooth to use them effectively).

Me and a few mates regularly get together for multiplayer retro game nights and all 4 controllers running at once has never caused an issue.

                Raspberry Pi3 Model B V1.2
16 GB Micro SD Card (OS), 4TB WD Elements Portable HDD (Roms)
                5V 3.0A Power Supply
                RetroPie V4.7.7, EmulationStation V2.9.6RP, RetroArch V1.8.8
                1 x Sonnics i8 Mini Keyboard (Wireless), 4 x Wii U Pro Controllers (Bluetooth)

Same here. I'm also a fan of the Wii U Pro controllers, mainly for their layout with the analog sticks outside of the digital controls, instead of inside like on the Playstation controllers. The latter always felt too cramped to me, and the asymmetric layout of the XBox controllers was never my cup of tea.

The Wii U Pro controllers also are big enough for my adult hands.

@GameController (Why would a GameController need a game controller himself? 😊) That said, you should first decide which layout you prefer, and then look out for the best controllers with that layout.

Nobody online can help you with the former, though. I would recommend that you go to a shop that has as many different styles of controllers as possible and test them first-hand.

You can't go wrong with any major brand. For me it's the dual shock 4. Great ergonomics, reliable, lots of buttons and a near perfect dpad for fighting games.

Pi 3B , 64 GB Sandisk ultra flashdrive, 19 systems, 872 hand picked classic gaming gems :-) Dual shock 4v2

It really depends on what systems you want to be able to play. The Logitech F310 is great on a budget and works well with almost all systems. I particularly enjoy the Hori Fighting Commander for my all in one build as it works great for Sega Genesis with the six face buttons and their build quality is top notch.

I also have the RetroFlag SNES and Genesis style case with their corresponding controllers and they are superbly built and feel like the original hardware.

Do you use a controller for psx? I need some help if you wouldn’t mind me picking your brain for a moment?

@Dthruking Maybe I could help? Generally best to just ask your questions on a forum so that others can just come along to help instead of withholding said questions.

                              Hi,

Basically I took an arcade1up cabinet and put a pi3 in it and everything was great. I have all my roms loading from external hard drive. I just bought a usb psx controller and n64 controller. I managed to get the psx controller to work but as soon as I reset the pi or game it doesn’t work anymore. Also the n64 controller I can’t get to work in game at all. When I try to do the n64 controller once I go into a game and it doesn’t work, I’m able to press start and select to exit the game but then my original joysticks done work anymore and I am forced to remap.

                              I’m stumped
