      I am currently experiencing crackling sounds when using Mame2003 and Mame2000 emulators. I've tried with the 3.5 jack as well as a USB sound card, same crackling results. Some games aren't as bad as others. (Donkey Kong worse than Galaga). (Notice that I am running RetroPie on a Linux laptop NOT on a raspberry pi)

      I must also mention that I am running RetroPie as well as all emulators in Vertical screen mode (I rotated my linux build with the xrandr command). However, I get the same crackling sounds when I run the games in horizontal screen mode.

      Retropie Toshiba Satellite 300 Core2Duo
      Linux Mint 19 Tara
      RetroPie version 4.4.2
