White screen on startup

I've been using a monitor to play games on my retropie system and just got a 3.5 inch screen that plugs directly into my raspberry pi 3b. When I start up my raspberry pi with the new screen it goes white and just stays there. How can I fix this?

@griff How does it plug 'directly' ? GPIO/HDMI ? Check the screen vendor instructions on how to get it to work with Raspbian and apply those instructions to your RetroPie system.
