I screwed up. Updated retropie on root not pi.
-
Well... idiot me here again with another stupid issue.
pi 3b+
usb wall adapter power supply
built from official image.
have usb keyboard and ps3 controllerError message is a s follows :
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'boot::filesystem::error'
what(): boost::filesystem::status: permission denied: "/root/retropie/retropiemenu/icons.audiosettings.png"
AbortedI managed to update retropie from root, and not the normal user-blame putty. And now it will not boot. It goes to retropie command line and freezes keyboard(i fixed by pushing ctrl+alt+printscrn+r)
So... i have access to command line both on pi and on putty and i have winscp configured. How do i go about rectifying it?If i cant fix the issue can you let me know the best way to save my overlays and roms etc.

@MosaicDragon You probably messed up the Emulationstation configuration file (
es_systems.cfg
). You'll have to edit the file in/etc/emulationstation
and fix the location of the ROM folders by replacing/root/RetroPie/roms
with/home/pi/RetroPie/roms
. Replace/root/RetroPie/retropiemenu
with/home/pi/RetroPie/retropiemenu
.
And also reset the permission on the ROM folders as advised in the docs. -
@mitu Done as suggested same error persists. Im stuck as far as it goes. Is it smart to just start over but back up the important bits(if you could tell me what they are)
-
@MosaicDragon Did you get the same error when starting Emulationstation ? You could back up the files over - see https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Updating-RetroPie/#making-a-backup-option-2 for different options.
-
@MosaicDragon look and see if you have an es_systems.cfg in /opt/retropie/configs/all/emulationstation/ If so then delete it or edit that file. Same thing happened to me.
-
@mitu I'm unsure how far or where the issue came from and I'm still unable to fix. Could you tell me which folders I'd need to backup to keep my roms and emulators as well as my themes and so on?
-
@MosaicDragon Have you read the page I posted ?
-
@MosaicDragon Have you read the page I posted ?
-
@mitu I did read it and I got the bios and Ron's folder, I'm unsure which else to get hence asking for a list- please remember I haven't done anything on linux/raspberry pi in quite a long time before now
-
@MosaicDragon Quoting the doc page:
if you don't want to create a sd image you can just back up your bios, roms, and configuration files from the samba shares.
-
@mitu I did read it... There's an awful lot of files for me to chose from... see here...
Thus saying backup bios and Rom and Config files is all very well but when I put a search in for config files I get rather too many results to know which I do and do not need.
I'm asking for specifics-where in each directory are the important bits found? -
@MosaicDragon said in I screwed up. Updated retropie on root not pi.:

Your screenshot shows a WinSCP session - this is not what is advised or shown in the doc link I posted. Are you not able to use File Shares on your PI ?
-
@mitu can't seem to get it working... Either my pi doesn't like it or Windows is screwed up. Hence my issue here.
-

Then you should have said it from the beginning. The folders shown via File Shares are as follows:
- roms -
/home/pi/RetroPie/roms
- bios -
/home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS
- configs -
/opt/retropie/configs
- splashscreens -
/home/pi/RetroPie/splashscreens
- roms -
-
@mitu Thanks! Stupid me got confused. Thought winscp was same as shares somehow... Duh. Now to wait to backup 200gb of roms as I swear if I lose them... That would be frustrating
-
@mitu sorry to bother you... Again. What should I do given I have just noticed lack of the configs folder?
-
@MosaicDragon Which folder are you checking for the
configs
? It's /opt/retropie/configs. -
@mitu I think ive done something... i managed to get into the retropie setup screen and ima try fix my system, ill let you know if i have any luck
-
@mitu Thats where i looked, its gone-vanished of the face of the earth, hope the setup script fixes it
