Mame2010 - using roms in 7zip format

I'm using Retropie 4.4.4
On the Retropie Github wiki it says that mame2010 now supports roms in 7z archives.

I added .7z to the es_systems.cfg file so they show up in the emulationstation mame menu.
But when I try to run a rom in a 7z it just drops me back to the ES menu
Could somebody please help me fix this problem?

Do I need to use an earlier version of 7zip or less compression for them to work on Mame2010?
I tried different settings but none of them worked.
7-zipped roms worked fine with NES, SNES, Megadrive etc. -
@johnsorger6 How did you create the 7z archive ?
Can you run with verbose logging enabled and post the contents of the log file/dev/shm/runcommand.logon pastebin.com so we can take a look at what errors appear ?
