Worth upgrading 4.3.3 to 4.4 Stretch?

  • Hello,

I've got the perfect image (for me anyway) running on my bartop running on 4.3.3. I spent ages getting all the themes, videos and sounds working and even longer getting the emulators working for the Amiga and C64 where the games load instantly now from the menu.

I can't remember fully how I did all this around 12 months ago, but see 4.4 is out and wondered if there is any reason to upgrade to 4.4?

I see there is a link on how to do it, is it still valid or is there an easier way? https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/16866/migrating-a-working-retropie-setup-to-the-new-stretch-image

    Thanks

You can see here the changelog: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Changelogs/

  • Thanks that is very useful. Not too many reasons to upgrade for me.

I guess if I do in short:

    • Download latest image and install on SDcard and boot up Pi.

    • Install all the emulators I use and Themes.

    • Use WinSCP to copy over data via the network from my SD card I have (expanded on my PC)

Do you know which folders I need to copy over apart from the ROMs?

    Thanks

  • @g0nz0uk i recommend the BIOS-Files, the configs, the gamelists and your downloaded images / Videos at least.

  • @g0nz0uk I first encountered RetroPie on February/March and then in April the new version came out. It was early to me and everything was so over helming that I don't remember that. I recommend you not to forget doing the backup and in best case order a new micro sd card, so you always can go back to your main setup. And if there is not a real reason to upgrade, then I wouldn't do it. Especially if your current setup works "perfectly" and have many little tweaks and details you probably would forget, as you already did this in your old setup. That is the reason why I did not purchase Pi 3B+ (I even need the better Wifi of it).

  • I would not upgrade without making a backup first. I just started a new image on a 400gb SD I got on Black Friday. Everything is running well however the videos on my snaps have major issues. Turns out that the VLC Player that RetroPie uses has an issue. I will not act as if I understand fully what the issue is. However, it is my understanding that it is not a codec issue, and the only workaround is to downgrade the player.

  • Thanks all, I have a backup and a spare SD card, I will give it a try.

@mitu posted awhile back how to downgrade the vlc player. I don't have the link for the thread. Maybe he could offer a suggestion.

  • @Cyborgbob My apologies. I thought your response was in the end a question in a roundabout way. Cheers!

EDIT: Thanks for the info on how to downgrade. Been a long day here..lol.

  • No worries
