I came across this thread where it shows some examples of modders using AI to upscale textures and the results are fantastic:

      https://www.resetera.com/threads/ai-neural-networks-being-used-to-generate-hq-textures-for-older-games-you-can-do-it-yourself.88272/

I set up my system to test it out on some pre-rendered sprites and my results look like rubbish, pretty similar to this but perhaps once I feed it the right training data it may end up looking more proper.

It would be pretty amazing to have it integrated as a shader of sorts for real time emulation but the processing required would be prohibitive, propbably easier for people to use manually generated modpacks for the time being

I saw this several days ago for a project of Final Fantasy 7 HD version: http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=18549.0

I doubt this would be usable in realtime, probably in form of a HD download patch. The new graphics card are starting to implement AI co-processors, maybe this is possible in the future. The results are really astonishing!
