No Raspberry Pi 4 in 2019.

Nonsense. How many on this very forum found out about,or got into the Pi because of Education ? How many ? I'll bet NONE.
I heard about the Pi long before I heard about RetroPie. About 5 years ago I remember I've seen it first, when a colleague bought one to measure the temperature and water level of his acquarium, then he put a motor to control the water levels there. At the time, we tried to get a Pi2(?) for a digital signage system working, but Chromium would barely run and
omxplayer
was the only choice to play HD video, so we had to scrape the idea.
So yeah, I heard about the Pi long before RetroPie.EDIT: just to add another experience to the point above - I got 2 other friends who bought a PI a few years back to run Kodi. One of them even got an Orange or BananaPi, but he gave up on it due to the poor (at the time) software support.
Oh, and I see you get all your forum "mates"to upvote you, and down-vote me". So much for "Community". It's only community if you fall inline with the gestapo.
You got absolutely zero downvotes in this topic.

The sample of people in this forum is clearly biased. Since this is a RetroPie forum we're all into emulation, and most likely we found out about Pi because we were looking for an emulation device. I don't think it would be like this for the average Pi user.
-
@John_RM_70 what down votes do you speak of? I thought we were just having a friendly conversation? No need to take offense when having a debate. The RPI foundation has stated that the reason they haven't made more expensive boards is that it would take away time and resources that could be spent getting their current lineup and future products developed. So far as emulation being the thing that put raspberry pi on the map, all one has to do is look at the official raspberry pi forums or raspberry pi Reddit to see that emulation is but a very tiny use category.
-
@John_RM_70 No one stops you from buying a more powerful device. Odroid could be a right choice but once you got one you will see not only speed difference you will also see lack of support. Yes this platform can run N64 and Dreamcast much smoother but also not 100% fluid. With 8 cores and a much more RAM this is not a good performance at all. As Server application or Desktop unit yes the XU4 will burn the Pie but especially in emulation you need optimization and CPU power together.
@mitu I get in touch with the Raspberry from a good friend. He developed robot controls with this and created a mp3 streamer with it 5 or 6 years ago. Then 2014 he gave me one unit as birthday present and I installed a small webserver on it. Later I used it for Kodi and with the B+ model of the Raspberry 1 I decided to give Retropie a try.
@UDb23 thx for the article

Oh really ? Check again.

Riiiiiight. Sure it is. Also, I don't see a "Friendly" conversation. I see you all posting in your usual mob gang mentality against anyone that has a slightly negative opinion of your god, the Pi Foundation. Christ, kids the lot of you.
I just checked and I see no downvotes. I personally was just having a friendly conversation but you have clearly taken offense to someone disagreeing with you. I think perhaps this discussion has run its course for me and maybe we can agree to disagree.

You seem to be the only one making personal attacks. Enough. Please come back in a couple of days.

Hi, new here to the forum, I've been running retropie in my pi 3 b+, it's great however does lag sometimes on N64, it's great software, I can't knock it at all. I was also disappointed there is no RPi 4 this year, however orange pi have released a new one, seems to have better specs than RPi 3, what are your thoughts on this board? Worth the upgrade? I think it's called the Orange Pi 3 H6 (the 2GB RAM model)

Are you guys serious? You banned him for having a different opinion? How this ended proofs him right. If we, the community don't like someone's opinion we just ban him? I have seen far worse people in here that deserved a ban but he was definitely not one of them.
You like it or not or maybe your personal experience with the Pi was different but as he said I also think that it got its biggest popularity boost due to the whole emulation thing. Otherwise what are we for here? Look at the sudden rise of themes for Emulationstation or accessory to make the Pi more of a home device than a science project.
Without the whole emulation stuff ES would have never evolved that far nor Retropie nor Pegasus.@administrators
You should definitely reconsider your ban decision here or one might really think this is the Gestapo. Free to have opinions and agree to disagree.
As long no swearing or personal attacks are made.
Saying we are like the Gestapo is not personal it is a fact for the behavior we showed towards him.A disappointed long time member here.

@FlyingTomahawk perhaps you should re-read the entire thread. Nowhere did anyone attack him for having a difference of opinion. Instead he took offense to everyone else having a different opinion from his own. In fact he really seemed to be getting worked up about it and started throwing accusations around. The guy needed some time to cool off. And from Buzz's message it sounds like a temporary ban.
-
@FlyingTomahawk Erm... no.
He got a 2 day ban for making it personal. As said - read the whole thread.
You're not helping btw. Please don't create a big drama.
-
I just did re-read the whole topic and I come to the same conclusion.
You want me to quote some of the comments to prove my point?
You and mitu clearly did not read what he was writing. That is why he might got a bit frustrated that doesn't make him wrong. The reason or main goal as to why the Raspberry Foundation build the Pi in the first place and the reason the Pi is so popular now have nothing to do with each other and that is what I read from your guys conversation. You guys were simply talking past each other.
Here a good example
He said:
Also, one could argue that it is emulation that has put the Pi where it is today.
mitus answer was
No, it's not - that's probably what you seem to fail to understand - retrogaming or emulation is not the target of the Pi Foundation when designing the Pi.
It doesn't matter what the target of the creator was. The undeniable fact remains that the Pi got its popularity due to Emulation.
Search Youtube for Raspberry Pi what search results do you get? I doubt it is about some science project in some university.
Maybe you and mitu got a first glimps of the Pi at someones science project which is great but still the fact remains Pi popularity = EmulationBuzz did give him a warning to cool off but he didn't give him any chance to replay or answer unless he did and Buzz removed it.
I just think this could have been handled a bit differently that's all I am saying.

I still can't see where it got personal but that's OK. It is your playground and that what I have to respect.
I'm done for to day I guess. Have a nice day everyone. -
My own personal opinion btw, is that emulation is not as important as people may believe in regards to the popularity of the raspberry pi. I would think there are many more Kodi only users. Maybe emulation is at 3 or 4 on a top list. I can draw a conclusion based on units sold and our download stats. My own experience with meeting people at raspberry pi events and locally, would also reflect this.

@FlyingTomahawk accusing moderators of downvoting (they didn't at the time - I downvoted a couple of posts later though when I came on the thread), referring to moderators as Gestapo, and saying "Christ, kids the lot of you" (for disagreeing only - noone had made any personal attack towards @John_RM_70).
-
So anyway.
Yeah, it’s too bad no new pi but I’d rather wait for what was planned than having a rushed unpolished system. You really can’t beat what these things are capable of for the price.
-
Buzz, just quickly something I want to mention.
You see my first post here in this topic? It got a down vote. And THAT is exactly what is wrong and what the other guy got frustrated with. I get a down vote for what? Expressing my opinion? Was I offensive or personal? That is exactly the childish behavior he was mentioning.
I didn't down vote anyone's post here or in any other topic unless they contain swearing or really offensive behavior. Neither did he. mitu, quicksilver, you or who ever is involved in this conversation are entitled to your opinions. So am I, as long no one of us shoots under the belt line. The down vote system should not be abused to express a disagreement in opinion but to make post visible that are not appropriate.
In future, at least show the names of the down voters so we can ask why. You can see the names on up votes when mouse over but not on down votes. -

@John_RM_70 didn't get any downvotes until he started angrily accusing me - or any other moderators - about ganging up. I noted that in my latest reply to the topic.
The down vote system should not be abused to express a disagreement in opinion but to make post visible that are not appropriate.
I agree, and probably that's why the downvotes appeared - for @John_RM_70 - after he went off-topic. I don't know who downvoted you, but it's probably because you ignored the 'please don't amplify the drama' request.
In future, at least show the names of the down voters so we can ask why. You can see the names on up votes when mouse over but not on down votes.
I'm not sure if it's a setting or just how the forum software works. As a moderator, I can see the same info as you (i.e. I don't see who downvited), so it might be something that's built into the forum software.
-
It was my first post. The don't make a drama warning comment came after it.
I just know it got out of hand quickly and it ain't the first time. I am visiting many other forums for other hobbies of mine and none has this kind of behavior issues. Maybe emulation makes people aggressive? Can't say for sure.
A thicker skin is probably more appropriate in this forum.
Anyways, as Buzz said I shouldn't make a big fuss out of it.
