I've got an issue that started after upgrading the retropie-setup script to version 4.4.5.
I don't know if my issue is related to that but it is the only thing that's changed on my system.
Whenever i launch any rom for any system, it doesn't auto launch. I get presented with the default emulator selection screen. The emulators are all set up properly and pressing X it launches ok. But It's slightly annoying and I've no idea why it is happening.
      Can anyone offer any advice?

      Thanks.

Check owner of your files in $HOME/.emulationstation they should be user pi

        Which image you are using?

Sorry forgot to say, I’m running on Ubuntu, followed the Debian install instructions. Everything has been running for months without issue.
I’ve checked the permissions, they are all owned by user pi.

@rogg23 How are you launching your games - are you using a keyboard or a gamepad/controller ? Are you sure you're not running other software alongside Emulationstation that's pressing a button at random when you launch the game ?

@mitu I’m using a wireless Xbox 360 controller. As far as I know nothing else is running that’s Simulating a key press, although I guess it’s a line of investigation to follow. Thanks

Tried killing joy2keypad, still the same.
I rebooted my machine and when emulation station started, I launched a rom. It launched fine without issue. I then exited and restarted the same rom and I got the emulator selection screen.
So really not sure what is going on or what may cause this behaviour.

Still not got this sorted, the only thing I haven't done is reinstalled.
Can't for the life of me work out if something is sending a rogue keypress.
But I have noticed on some occasions pressing A worked ok to launch the ROM. Other times only the left shoulder button worked so something is definitely amiss somewhere.
For now I have disabled the runcommand launch menu. That's a partial resolution.
