the internet is full of weird descriptions of how to access the EXT4 file system of your Retropie SD card. The tutorials include virtual machines and lots of stuff that is a pain in the a... plus it mostly does not work!

today i found a freaking awesome little software that is a no brainer and just works without ANY hassle. Install, plug in your SD, mount, done... full read and write access to the retropie partition in your windows environment

it is a commercial software and costs 19,99€ after 10 days test period without restrictions. Worth every penny in my opinion.

just a thought, not tested: is it possible to shrink the EXT4 partition with this?

If you have 20 bucks burning a hole in your pocket that may be ok.

One may also check [1] and find the personal best matching solution.
IMHO hints on stackoverflow / superuser mostly aren't weird.
