Adafruit 5.0" non touch tft with kippah not displaying anything

I am using the 5.0" adafruit tft with there kippah and i followed the guide on https://learn.adafruit.com/running-opengl-based-
games-and-emulators-on-adafruit-pitft-displays/pitft-setup and https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-dpi-display-kippah-ttl-tft/installation
after following these i always get a white screen followed by a black screen on the gpio display and hdmi display.
i tried many other guides even ones for the waveshare screens but none of them seem to work.
does anyone know what im doing wrong or what i have to edit in the config file to get it to work?
info- Raspberry pi 3 b+
- Adafruit 5.0" non touch
- Adafruit kippah
